San Diego State baseball coaches have a long and impressive history of developing successful players and teams. The program has produced over 75 players who have gone on to play in the major leagues, including Tony Gwynn and Stephen Strasburg.
Tony Gwynn served as the head coach of the SDSU baseball team from 2002 until his death in 2014. Gwynn, a 15-time All-Star who spent his entire career with the San Diego Padres, also played for the SDSU Aztecs in the late 1970s. Under Gwynn's leadership, the team won four Mountain West Conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times.
Mark Martinez took over as head coach in 2015 after serving as an assistant coach under Gwynn. Martinez has continued the winning tradition, leading the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances in his first five seasons as head coach.
Other notable San Diego State baseball coaches include Jim Dietz, who coached the program for 31 seasons and guided the team to 11 conference championships, and Dave Winfield, a Hall of Fame outfielder who served as an assistant coach for the team in the 1990s.
